Services and Expertise

Perivallon, Inc. has hands-on experience with a variety of remediation technologies that degrade contaminants or reduce their mobility in the environment, including:

  • Bioremediation
  • In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO)
  • In situ chemical reduction (ISCR)
  • In situ solidification stabilization (ISS)
  • Phytoremediation
  • Surfactant enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR)
  • Thermal desorption and destruction of contaminants

My Expertise

Perivallon, Inc. works hand in glove with you, to create comprehensive, integrated solutions. These create a clear path to site closure, reduce environmental risk and achieve sustainable solutions at minimal cost.

Over the years, we have gained knowledge from our extensive research and use it to offer the following services:

  • Testing and evaluating remediation technologies.
  • Costing out selected remediation technologies.
  • Negotiating regulatory options and developing site exit strategies.

Solutions Offered

Perivallon, Inc. has collaborated with the Michigan Department of Environment and Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) (formerly the department of environmental quality, or DEQ) to find practical and cost-effective solutions to a variety of PFAS contamination problems around the state. These include:

  • Characterizing and removing PFAS based foams that form on surface waters and beaches.
  • Removing PFAS from extracted groundwater during pump and treat operations using sorption onto activated carbon, biochar, charcoal, and ion exchange resins.
  • Stabilization & solidification treatment to reduce PFAS leaching in a variety of impacted materials that must currently be landfilled, such as soils, biosolids, liquids, aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) wastes, and reverse osmosis residual.

PFAS Contamination

Hundreds of sites in North America have been contaminated for decades with a large family of anthropogenic chemicals known as PFAS (per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

Studies in the recent years have revealed that PFAS are far more toxic and stable than previously thought. As a result, the concentrations allowed in drinking water have been reduced to unprecedentedly low levels (parts-per-trillion), and PFAS now pose the greatest challenge to the remediation field.

Pump-and-treat is necessary to contain and manage plumes of PFAS contamination in groundwater, because there are currently no reliable methods that destroy PFAS in situ.

While destruction technologies are being developed, there is an urgent need to remove PFAS from extracted groundwater and to dispose of PFAS wastes (e.g., aqueous film-forming foams, or AFFFs) and PFAS-contaminated materials (e.g., soils, biosolids, spent PFAS sorbents) in secure landfills that protect groundwater from further PFAS contamination.

Bench-Scale Testing

Perivallon Inc. has conducted over 400 bench-scale and pilot-scale treatability studies on soils, sediments, groundwater, leachates, solid wastes and gas streams. Our founder, Daniel Cassidy, has developed probes to isolate reactants, and assays to quantify contaminants and their degradation products. We developed custom laboratory tests to evaluate, compare and optimize various remediation technologies, close contaminant mass balances, and identify contaminant degradation products.

My Solutions

Using the insights and knowledge gained from rigorous bench-scale testing, Dr. Cassidy became one of the first remediation experts to publicize and promote the need for combined remedies to achieve closure at many contaminated sites.

Dr. Cassidy has been conducting applied research and consulting on site remediation technologies for over 30 years.
